There are a couple ways of doing this. Here I'm using flat chisels
which do a pretty good job.

There is still a lot to do on just the faces in the final finishing
process, but this is now ready for the next step.

The little rectangle plate shown is a "metal scraper" which is used during various
stages to smooth the surface of the wood and help create the smooth "sculptured"
look that my bridges have.
